INFORMATION FOR CELLISTS, PARENTS AND TEACHERS

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is the concert?

The concert will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 in the new auditorium at Orem High School.

We are starting early because we have a large task ahead of us of combining cellists from all of Utah County. All High School cellists from Nebo, Provo, and Alpine School districts are invited to participate plus cellists from BYU and UVU. All adult cellists in the community are also invited.

Orem High School has graciously offered to sponsor the concert.

Will there be any expense for me to participate?

No. The only thing they need is transportation to rehearsals in Orem and Sunday best dress for the concert. Everything else is taken care of. Those participating in ensembles, costuming will be provided.

What is an all cello orchestra concert?

There are 2 parts to the concert. The large all cello orchestra which will be playing 3 pieces of music. Then there are about 10 all cello ensemble groups that will perform before and after the all cello orchestra. The special ensemble groups were by audition or invitation and will show the diversity of this beautiful instrument. The all cello orchestra will start rehearsals on October 9, 2010. That afternoon, all cellists will meet together at Orem High School in the orchestra room. They will choose the parts they want to play, we will go through the music and and I will answer any additional questions you have.
There are 4 sections in orchestra. Each section has 2 section leaders that I have chosen to rehearse their section through October and November. They have been invited to rehearse at the Orem Public Library in the storytelling wing. They will rehearse in sections every other week through those two months on Saturdays for 1 1/2 hours somewhere between the times of 3- 6 pm. Starting January 15 we will put the entire orchestra together for rehearsals also on Saturday afternoons. Dress rehearsal will be Friday, March 25th with lighting and sound technicians. The concert will be held on Saturday evening.

Who is over this ?

My name is Janice H. Baker and I am putting on this concert. I am a cellist and live Orem. You can read more about me here. You can read more about my concert here.

The students' orchestra teachers are not involved in this. They just provided me an opportunity to come to the school and meet with all the cellists so I could tell them what I am doing and see who is interested in participating in this great opportunity. I will be doing all the auditions, rehearsals, and communications. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me directly.

Why an all cello concert?

When I was a 15 year old High School student, I had a wonderful opportunity to hear and play in a large group of cellists that were the top high school cellists in the entire state of Arizona. Hearing so many amazing cellists all together truly inspired me. From that moment on, I wanted to do a concert where the entire stage was filled with just cellos.

Playing the cello brought into my life a lot of amazing experiences that I wouldn't of had, had I not played it. I learned self discipline, I met amazing people and traveled to amazing places because of that instrument. I wanted others to experience the passion of cellists in their craft and the instruments diversity. This concert is a fulfillment of a dream that I have had for a very long time. My hope is that it will inspire the cellists who participate who were around the age I was, with their own dreams.

What is the yahoo group I have been invited to join?

There is no way that I can call or email 100 cellists about every rehearsal. Modern technology has made it so that I can use my yahoo email and email certain groups of cellists or a blanket email that covers all the cellists with one email. (students do not need to be on yahoo- any email works) All students have been assigned a grouping under my cello dream account. They will each need to accept the invite to belong to my group, it is free and private, but what that does is make it so that they can receive my email reminders about upcoming rehearsals. The calendar posted to the right on this blog AND the emails will be our communication unless I am notified that we need another option for a particular student.

Email me if you have other questions and I will post them for everyone. Thank you!

Photo Shoot of Individual Cellists

I wanted to get a photo shoot in this summer of each of the cellists alone with their cellos. These are the cellists who are the stars of the show and I will put their pictures in the foyer as people are entering the auditorium. This will be my gift to them for doing the concert with me and spending their summer at rehearsals etc. Photographer Cathy Adams took three poses of each cellists. The cellist chose their own poses with their own style!

SUMMER- CELLO PHOTO SHOOT

I wanted to get pictures for advertising posters in an outdoor setting so I invited any cello players that wanted to be in them to meet me at a beautiful orchard in Provo. Brianna Dickerson from Brianna Nicole Photography did the photo shoot.

Here are just a few of my favorites from the photo shoot.
